ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government adopts the ECOWAS Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Policies

The 43rd Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, which held in Abuja, Nigeria from July 17 – 18, 2013 renewed its commitment to the provision of access to sustainable energy services in West Africa by adopting the ECOWAS Energy Efficiency Policy as well as the ECOWAS Renewable Energy Policy.  The Authority also directed the ECOWAS Commission to take all the necessary measures to facilitate the implementation of the corresponding action plans of the two path-breaking policies.

Distant-learning programme on sustainable energy for West African experts of utilities, regulators and IPPs, Application deadline: 31 August 2013

The ECOWAS Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (ECREEE), the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) in cooperation with the Columbia University's School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS) in New York and the Engineering Department of the University of Cape Verde (UNICV) in Mindelo, Sao Vicente, are executing a part-time certified distance-learning programme on sustainable energy for West African experts from utilities, regulators and IPPs. Qualified and interested experts from all fifteen ECOWAS countries are invited to apply.

Signing of MOU on the establishment of the East African Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (EACREEE)

VIENNA, 28 May 2013 – ECREEE supports the establishment of other regional sustainable energy Centers in Africa in cooperation with UNIDO, the East African Community and the Southern African Development Community (SADC).  ECREEE participated actively in the preparatory meetings of the East African Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (EACREEE) and presented experiennces in West Africa during the EACREEE validation workshop, held form 8 to 9 May 2013 in Kampala, Uganda.

West Africa nations to phase out incandescent lamps

Government representatives from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) have established a regionally coordinated framework to phase-out of inefficient incandescent lamps by 2020 at the latest. The nations together could save a total of 2.4 terawatt hours of electricity - equivalent to 6.7 percent of total annual energy consumption -  that would be enough to power over 1.2 million households.
