The Thirty-Sixth Regular Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), held at Bridgetown, Barbados, 2-4 July 2015, endorsed the establishment of the "Caribbean Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (CCREEE)" as the implementation hub for sustainable energy activities and projects within the region.
The meeting accepted also the offer of the Government of Barbados to host the Secretariat of the Centre. In 2014 a consultative preparatory process to determine the technical and institutional design of CCREEE was executed by UNIDO, SIDS DOCK and the Energy Unit of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) with financial support of the Austrian Development Agency (ADA).
The CCREEE project document and needs assessment was validated during a regional workshop held from 21 to 22 July 2014 in Roseau, Commonwealth of Dominica. The creation of CCREEE was considered during the Fifty-Fourth Special Meeting of the COTED (Energy), as well as the Fifty-Fifth Special Meeting of the COTED (Energy and Environment), held in Guyana from 2-5 February 2015.
The centre is part of a wider initiative which aims at the creation of a network of regional sustainable energy centres for Small Island Developing States (SIDS) in the Pacific, Caribbean, Indian Ocean and Africa. The initiative was included in the implementation matrix of the SAMOA Pathway adopted at the Third International Conference on Small Island Developing States, held in September 2014 in Apia, Samoa.
The ECOWAS Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (ECREEE), based in Cape Verde, was nominated by SIDS DOCK as the hub for SIDS in Africa. The network offers plenty of room for knowledge exchange and transfer of adapted energy and climate resilience solutions. Many SIDS share common opportunities and challenges when it comes to the up-scaling of sustainable energy marktets and industries.
