ECREEE - Developing Renewable Energy Sectors and Technologies in West Africa

Facing the facts: The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is comprised of the 15 sovereign States of Benin, Burkina Faso, Cabo Verde, Côte d’Ivoire, the Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone and Togo—united in their collective desire to achieve regional integration in all sectors of economic activity, as well as in social and cultural spheres.

PRIME-MINISTER OF CABO VERDE CONGRATULATES THE ROLE OF ECREEE

The first International Fair on Environment and Renewable Energy (FIAER 2016) emerged as an innovative and pioneering event in Cabo Verde and its purpose was to drive forward the Renewable Energy sector. In Cabo Verde,  the sector is considered to be a strategic pillar to substantially reduce external dependence through the production of clean and environmentally friendly energy for the construction of “a dynamic, competitive, innovative and sustainable economy, and of prosperity shared with all”.

Validation workshop of the National Action Plan on Sustainable Cooking Energy of The Gambia

The West Africa Clean Cooking Alliance (WACCA), in collaboration with The Gambian Ministry of Energy, held the validation workshop of the National Action Plan on Sustainable Cooking Energy on December 23rd, 2015 at the Baobab Resort Hotel, Bijilo.

10 MW Solar PV PPA signed in the Gambia

On January 8th 2016, the National Water & Electricity Company (NAWEC) has signed a 10 MW Solar PV Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for a 25 years duration with the Independent Power Producer Emerging Power (Gambia) Limited a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) between Z-One and Tryba Energy.

Tuesday 13th Mrs. Amita Misra, UNIDO’s Director, Regional Programmes and Field Representative, accompanied by Mr. Victor Djemba, UNIDO Representative  and Mr. Rui Levy, National Coordinator, undertook a visit to the Government of Cabo Verde for the the launching of the UNIDO Country Programme Framework for Inclusive and Sustainable Industrial Development.

SOLAR PV IINSTALLERS IN ECOWAS

In response to the identified shortage of qualified solar PV installers and maintenance technicians in West Africa the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), the West African Economic and Monetary Union (UEMOA) and ECOWAS Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (ECREEE) with support from other partners incl. GIZ have been working together to establish a regional certification scheme for installers of solar PV systems.

High Level Delegation from The Gambia Energy and Environment Sectors visits Cabo Verde for Study Tour

The ECOWAS Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (ECREEE) in partnership with United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) organized a study tour of a high level delegation from Gambia in Cape Verde, from 23th to 27th November 2015. The aim of the study tour was to enable an exchange between The Gambia and Cape Verde on sustainable energy development in order to create synergies in the sector of renewable energy and energy efficiency.
